East Contra Costa County residents who enjoy the art of writing are invited to submit samples of their work that might appear in the next edition of a book. The city of Brentwood is seeking poetry, short stories and nonfiction from locals around the region including Liberty Union High School District juniors and seniors. Writings that are chosen will appear in the fifth volume of “In Mt. Diablo’s Shadow,” a compilation of prose and poems that the city’s Poet Laureate Kati Short will assemble.

The PHS Auxiliary estimates it has raised nearly $3 million for shelter animals since the event began in 1988, which has allowed an average of 200 animals every month to be made well through the Hope Program and placed into loving homes.
