Dorrance, 35, grew up in a house where movement and dance and extraordinary achievement were omnipresent. Her mother M’Liss Gary Dorrance was a long-time ballet dancer who founded and directed the Ballet School of Chapel Hill. Her father, Anson Dorrance, led the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to the World Cup in 1991 (and currently coaches the University of North Carolina’s women’s soccer team). In 2007, Santa Clara tech firm Nvidia decided to ditch the traditional office holiday party and replace it with Project Inspire, an annual community service event for its employees and their families. That first year drew 500 volunteers, who helped spruce up a charter school in East Palo Alto. For its 10th project, more than 1,650 volunteers — including co-founder Chris Malachowski — spent two days working at Oak Grove High School in South San Jose. They painted murals, built benches and picnic tables and installed big versions of childhood games like Jenga and Connect Four for students to enjoy during breaks. (It wasn’t all grueling effort; the volunteers enjoyed a paella lunch provided by caterer Parsley Sage Rosemary & Thyme.).
